LNG export was initially to Japan, but when in 1986 the construction of train 6 of the Arun LNG plant was finished, South Korea became the second export destination after Japan. In 1990 the LNG market would be extended to Taiwan.

The ASEAN fertilizer plant in Lhok Seumawe used gas from Arun as feedstock. Its construction was funded by ASEAN its products marketed in the ASEAN countries.
