The year 1974 was the onset of the use of geothermal energy in Indonesia. PERTAMINA was entrusted by the government to develop geothermal energy.
In 1974 the Cilacap refinery was built, processing Arabian Light Crude with the capacity of 100,000 barrels a day. Besides to fulfill the need of fossil fuels, also to fulfill the need of lubricants and asphalt.
Pertamina and Union Oil built a Liquid Extraction (LEX) plant to produce LPG, which started operating in 1976 with a capacity of 125 million standard cubic feet a day.

This plant was operated by PT Badak, a joint venture of PERTAMINA, Total Indonesia and Huffco. President Soeharto inaugurated this plant on August 1,1977.
