The search for oil and the legislative basis for oil operations during the Dutch - Indies period

The first search for oil which was unsuccessful.

In 1871, Jan Reerink, a store keeper started to drill for oil in Cibodas, funded by the Nederlandsche Handels Maatschappij, but was unsuccessful due to unsuitable equipment and technique.
Telaga Said was the first commercially producing well.

In 1885, oil was commercially produced for the first time at the Telaga Tunggal-1 well, North Sumatera. The concession area was later officially named as Telaga Said.

The Indische Mijn Wet (IMW) and its amendments contained protection for the mining activities of Dutch or Dutch Indies citizenz or companies.
